With almost 100 million people attending some event with live music every year, people love to pay for a good musical experience. Nothing makes a great live experience like great sound equipment and high-quality instruments. If you're in the market of putting on live experiences, you might find yourself renting musical instruments or some equipment to get the show on the road.
Here are 5 things you need to think about when it's time to rent an instrument.
1. Choose A Brand You Know
Before you decide to rent from a musical instrument company, be sure that you know what you'll be getting on the day of the event. If you or the band you're renting for are diehards of a certain make and model, you're going to want to give them something they're familiar with.
You need to know the setup the players are comfortable working with before you choose your instruments to rent. Just like a Formula One driver will build an intimate relationship with their car and couldn't race with anyone else's car, your players need familiar instruments. If your drummer is used to an 8-piece set up and you hand them a 14-piece set up out of the kindness of your heart, you could be crowding their workspace.
Be sure everyone knows what to expect and that the company you're renting from has something everyone feels good about. If they don't have what you need, see what they can do to match the same or similar setup.
2. Check Out the Size
Believe it or not, there are a different size and weight to every single instrument and piece of equipment. Even a standup comic has a microphone and stands that they'll prefer to work with over another type. Surely a guitar player will have a preferred size of a guitar to play.
Check out what you or the players are comfortable with playing and be sure the rental company has the size you're looking for.
Some jazz drummers like a big set to sit behind and play with a thunderous sound. Others like to be able to tower over their own set and really play every square inch of the set. Different sized instruments will have a different sound.
You'll also only have enough space for a certain amount of equipment on the stage you've rented. If you're ordering a gigantic PA system, you might not have any place to set it up at a small indie venue.
3. Get An Insurance Plan
Instruments and the related equipment goes through hell and back at every show. It's a miracle that any piece of equipment lasts more than a single show, let alone or residency or a tour.
Musical equipment is expensive. If something happens, no matter how old the equipment is that you're renting, you could owe the price of a new piece of equipment. Stay safe and get an insurance plan.
You can't plan for how people will behave at your performance. If you're renting for other performers who you don't know, there's no telling what can happen. Just like how people mistreat rental cars or misbehave when staying in a hotel room, people treat rented musical equipment different than their own.
An insurance plan might cost just a few dollars per day compared to the thousands you could be shelling out following an incident. Be sure the insurance policy also covers theft if you're in the same venue for a few days in a row. The insurance company, to avoid paying out, will do an investigation so you'll be paying for that for the low price of insurance.
If the company you're renting from doesn't offer insurance, you can usually extend your own insurance plan to cover these things.
4. See What Accessories Come Along
Having the right accessories is essential to have a great performance with rented equipment. Every piece of technology requires a specific plug or a certain cable to function. Rather than having to scramble once the equipment arrives, communicate with the rental company beforehand.
Rending drums and guitars, you could need tuning keys, heads, and strings. See that all the equipment you rent comes with some kind of backup plan. The tuning keys should be in working order, and the heads should be fairly new.
Sometimes when you rent things like turntables, you need to provide your own needles. Some PA systems require a separate microphone rental or for you to provide your own microphone. Check that whatever you're buying comes with everything you need and that whatever you have is compatible with what you're renting.
5. Ask About Amplification
If you're renting equipment that might need to be amplified, come with as much information as you can about the place where you'll be using it. If you're getting a huge amplification system for a small theater, you could be overdoing things. If you're getting an amp built for bingo night at an amphitheater, you could be in trouble.
Let your rental company know how many people you plan to be playing for or how many people the venue seats. This will give them an idea of how much power you'll need. A kids' birthday party will have different needs than a symphony so be sure you're prepared for whatever the event it is that you're planning.

Since they spend so many years learning to play a certain type of instrument a certain way, they can become very finicky.
